Learning Effective Habits
Preventative dentistry is the key to effective treatment, and that means practicing proper home care in addition to visiting Dr. Robson for regular checkups twice a year. The sooner we discover an issue, the easier it is to treat. That’s why good dental care is an investment in your long term health.
Effective home care that includes daily brushing and flossing along with regular dental hygiene office visits is essential for preventing a number of issues, especially tooth decay and gum disease. At Robson Dental, we instruct all our patients on the importance of a healthy diet and the proper ways to care for their smile.
Tooth decay, commonly referred to as cavities, and gum disease are both caused by bacteria that feed on plaque, tartar, and other debris in your mouth. The sooner your kids learn how to effectively care for their smile, the less likely they’ll be to contract these damaging infections.
Your Child’s First Visit
Many parents don’t realize that kids require proper care for their teeth from the moment their first tooth emerges. Primary teeth, which are often referred to as “baby teeth,” need to receive proper care even though they’re eventually going to fall out. This will keep your child’s gums healthy and help prevent tooth decay and other issues with their permanent teeth.
Primary teeth are often referred to as “nature’s braces” because they set the stage for the permanent teeth. That’s why your children need to visit our office for regular hygiene visits at least twice a year. This way, Dr. Robson can monitor their progress and make sure they’re developing properly.
As soon as your child reaches their first birthday or when their first tooth comes out, you can schedule a first appointment with Dr. Robson. You should clean the area around their first tooth regularly with a damp cloth, but don’t begin to use fluoridated toothpaste until Dr. Robson says your child is ready. When children are bottle-feeding, it’s extremely important to avoid giving them sweet beverages such as juice or soda before bedtime and to thoroughly clean their smiles every day to help prevent cavities.
