Dental Hygiene Visits in Grand Rapids, MI

Stay On Track with Your Smile Protection

Your smile is meant to last a lifetime, but you have to maintain it with proper hygiene habits and routine visits to our Grand Rapids, MI, office. Here are four ways to keep your smile in optimal condition:

  1. Practice effective home care by brushing and flossing twice a day.
  2. Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet.
  3. Avoid sugary foods, especially between meals.
  4. Visit Dr. Robson at least twice a year for regular hygiene visits.

Preventive Care: Defend Your Smile for the Long Haul

Keeping your smile healthy begins with comprehensive preventive care. For this reason, we recommend visiting Dr. Robson and the rest of our staff at Robson Family Dental.

Professional Cleanings

We’ll begin each routine checkup with a thorough professional cleaning. Our hygienist will remove the plaque and tartar from your smile. This step is essential because the bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease feed on plaque and tartar.

Following the cleaning, we’ll polish your smile so that it looks beautiful. Another benefit of polishing your teeth is that it makes it harder for plaque to stick to them.

X-Rays

As part of your hygiene visit, we’ll collect a full set of images using our digital x-ray machine, which is faster, safer, and less intrusive than traditional x-rays. Taking x-rays is crucial because it allows Dr. Robson to identify potential issues such as tooth decay, abscesses, tumors, impacted teeth, and teeth that haven’t grown correctly.

Oral Cancer Screening

After your x-rays, Dr. Robson will conduct a complete examination of your mouth. He’ll review the x-ray images and check your smile for any issues. Your exam will also include a full screening for oral cancer.

Do I need to visit a general dentist?
Yes! You still need to visit a general dentist even if you take good care of your teeth. Even the best of us can miss spots and require a professional’s help to keep our smiles sparkling. Our team can take care of those hard-to-reach areas to help prevent oral disease.

There are also some oral health conditions that may not be obvious to you because they don’t cause any pain or aren’t visible. Sometimes, cavities don’t even hurt until they require immediate treatment.

If you come into our Grand Rapids office for your regular six-month appointments, we can make sure your teeth are clean and detect any issues before they require more invasive treatments.

How can I prevent cavities?
Cavities, also known as tooth decay, occur when bacteria buildup on your teeth and turn into plaque. If plaque isn’t removed, it hardens into tartar and the built-up bacteria will break down the minerals in your teeth, creating a cavity. There are a few ways you can prevent cavities, including:

  • Avoid sugary, sticky, or acidic food and beverages
  • Use products that contain fluoride
  • Consider dental sealants–most appropriate for children
  • Brush twice a day, floss daily, and rinse between meals
  • Avoid tobacco products

In addition to following the above-mentioned tips, make sure that you contact our office to schedule biannual checkups and professional cleanings by calling (616) 942-9595. During your appointments, we’ll be sure to thoroughly examine your teeth and gums to look for any signs of decay.

I knocked out a tooth, can it be saved?
Whether or not your tooth can be saved depends on various factors such as the amount of damage to the crown and root, as well as how quickly you seek help. Being treated immediately increases your likelihood of a successful reimplantation. In the meantime, you’ll want to:

  • Rinse the tooth so it’s free of debris
  • Hold the tooth by the crown, not the root
  • Place the tooth in a container with milk
  • Bite down on gauze to stop any bleeding

Contact our office at your earliest convenience by calling (616) 942-9595 and we’ll do our best to salvage your tooth. If your tooth can’t be reimplanted, we may recommend tooth replacement options such as a dental implant or bridge.

How can I improve my oral health?
Your oral health is best maintained by brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and rinsing between meals. In addition to maintaining good oral hygiene, you’ll want to schedule bi-annual check-ups and professional cleanings at our Warren dental office.

There are a few ways you can further improve your oral health, including:

  • Use oral care products that contain fluoride
  • Brush your teeth before bed
  • Avoid frequent snacking
  • Limit sugary and acidic foods
  • Eat tooth-healthy foods

During your appointment, our helpful staff will provide any additional tips to improve your at-home oral care.
