Are root canals painful?

Patients dread the often-maligned root canal procedure fearing that it is a painful experience.

The truth is the exact opposite. An active infection causes the pain that patients typically associate with the root canal procedure.

The root canal procedure will typically relieve most, or all of the pain caused by the infected root and allow healing to begin!

And as for the procedure itself, we carefully apply a local anesthetic that will numb the tooth and surrounding gums and jaw area for your comfort. You may feel pressure, but the root canal procedure should feel no different than a dental filling.

There may be some post-operation soreness around the root canal site, but the throbbing pain caused by the infection stops for most patients immediately. Your discomfort will gradually decrease over the coming days as your body's natural healing takes over.

For patients with anxiety about visiting the dentist, we also have sedation options you can discuss with Dr. Robson.
