What is gingivitis?

Gingivitis is the first stage of periodontal disease, and it is the only stage of periodontal disease that is reversible. Because of the condition's time-sensitive nature, we recommend that any patient with gingivitis seek treatment as soon as possible.

It occurs when bacterial biofilm builds up on the teeth. The build-up starts to interfere with the gum's ability to protect the teeth and makes it easier for more bacteria to get in under the gums.

Some of the symptoms of gingivitis include:

  • Bad breath
  • Heavy tartar build-up around teeth
  • Receding gumline
  • Tenderness or soreness in gums, especially while brushing or flossing
  • Bleeding caused by flossing
  • Redness and swelling in gums

If gingivitis is left untreated, it progresses to more advanced stages of periodontal disease, called periodontitis. It can cause permanent damage to the gums, teeth, and jawbone as it advances. At that point, treatment is still possible to mitigate the issues and help prevent further damage.

If you have gingivitis scheduling a time to come in and meet with Dr. Robson to have your gingivitis treated is the best choice for your dental health.
